Part One features useful hints and information for tramping with children, including planning your trip, the unwritten rules for staying in huts, what to take with you, what to wear, and ideas for meal planning. It also covers helpful tips for tramping safely and dealing with emergency situations.

Part Two has over thirty suggestions for South Island tramping tracks. These range from beginning to medium tracks and each section also explains why the tramp is suitable for children, and some also give a brief history of the track.

Colour photographs show what many of the tracks and huts are like, and illustrate how children are quite capable of walking long distances.
