The land wars erupted in Taranaki and South Auckland. There was no roading infrastructure between towns at that time and many towns relied upon the services of coastal trading schooners. New Plymouth was a town isolated during the war and was totally dependent on shipping for supplies of food and goods.

Sam Garrett, ship builder and owner, in partnership with Luke Proctor, plans to expand their coastal trading business by replacing their sailing ships with modern steamships. They have to contend not only with the wars, but also with sabotage from their long time adversary Charles Thornton from Sydney who attempts to destroy their family and business.
