Te Wai Pounamu – The Glorious South of the South Island

Awesome! Amazing! Beautiful! Stunning! Spectacular!
These are some of the words the author uses to describe many of the sights seen on this “trip-of-a-life-time” to the south of the South Island, undertaken when the closure of Aotearoa/New Zealand’s borders, during the Covid-19 pandemic, made domestic travel easily accessible for the first time in decades.
In addition to providing a personal record of a wonderful experience, this book also touches on the history of some of the places visited, chronicles New Zealand’s dealings with The Virus up to the end of 2021, and, most importantly, gives a glimpse, to those who haven’t visited this region, of what is arguably one of the loveliest, most pristine places on Earth.
Peter Lowery –
A tour of the South Island on empty roads, what could be better?
Helen Staniland captures in words and pictures the road trip we would all like to do. The photographs perfectly capture the magnificent vistas and the words thoughtfully describe a little history of each place. The intro on the Covid situation will be helpful to look back on in coming years.
A book to take with you on your trip south.

Bev Humphreys –
This is an interesting account of a three week trip around one of the really special parts of this country.
The style of writing is friendly with descriptions of people and places around the area. Many notes of historical interest give a good picture of the local community, also practical comments about camping grounds are useful.
Highlights of the book are the many photographs which are of a high standard. All are well-captioned and appropriately placed in conjunction with the written account ……….
This book is a highly recommended account of travel and a significant time in the social structure of this country.
Paul and Meg Wade –
