The Catalogue of a Creative Life.
I was quite young when in answer to my mother’s query as to my ambition I announced I was going to be a writer. I clearly already knew I wouldn’t fit the usual boxes expected of a female of my time. I imagined I’d be a professional of some sort but I never thought for a moment that I would eventually become a professional woodturner. It was a niche which suited my independent, creative spirit for nearly twenty years and was a very satisfying way to make a living.

Betty Scarpino –
Gael Montgomerie’s book is a compelling, well-written story of a craft artist’s dedication–and struggle–to live a life and earn a living as a woodturner. I met Gael during her first visit to the US and connected with her during several subsequent visits. Having lost touch, I was delighted to read more about her adventures.
Unavoidable is that some of the images, printed from slides, are not as sharp as today’s digital photos would be. Nonetheless, Gael’s turned-and-embellished vessels are obviously magnificent, rivaling current contemporary turned-objects. This book belongs in every woodturner’s library, as well as in the hands of anyone interested in personal, creative journeys.
