Weka are widespread throughout the Marlborough Sounds, along parts of the West Coast of the South Island, about Kawakawa Bay near Auckland, at an inland area near East Cape, and on the Chatham Islands. They are present on many inshore islands around New Zealand. Weka occur in forested and scrub-covered habitat from the ridge and hill-tops down to sea level. In addition, suitable habitat includes farmland, and around peoples’ homes, farm buildings and gardens. They are inquisitive by nature, even if furtively, including venturing into peoples’ homes and sheds when the opportunity permits.
