Russell caught the ‘aviation bug’ in childhood, and went on to log almost 30,000 hours in the air.

He has flown single-engine light aircraft, light twins and numerous types of helicopter. Well known as a versatile pilot, Russell specialised in flying at low altitude over rugged terrain, and was involved in a wide range of commercial operations, and a number of search and rescue missions.
