Robert (Bob) Brathwaite spent his early life in New Plymouth, but made regular visits to his paternal grandparents to Havelock North. This kindled his interest in the Brathwaite family history in Hawke’s Bay. He qualified as a geologist (Victoria University MSc 1964) and worked in mine geology and mineral deposit research in Tasmania (PhD University of Tasmania 1970).
Bob then worked as a mineral exploration geologist in Queensland, NSW and Western Australia.
He returned with his family to New Zealand in 1979 to work as a minerals geologist at the NZ Geological Survey, now Earth Science NZ. He is author or co-author of some 100 scientific papers, reports and geological maps.
