1972. An international ring of jewellery thieves descends on Lower Hutt to burgle a top-end manufacturing jewellery outlet. These dangerous criminals are led by Charlie Toth—thief, burglar and killer.
In the wake of this crime, two unarmed police officers are shot dead at the scene; a shocking event in 1970s New Zealand, where police officers do not generally carry guns and criminals rarely use deadly force against them.
Detective Inspector Quentin de Somerville, a top homicide detective with many murder investigations under his belt, leads the manhunt, joined by a team of dedicated uniform and plainclothes police.

Thoroughly enjoyed the book and I was especially pleased to see non sworn (ie typists) getting a mention 🙃. It brought back lots of memories for me – I was a typist in Lower Hutt between 1974-76, and then later in Whanganui. I am an avid mystery/crime reader, and want to read more of your books, so please get writing!

  2. Mark

The book is done and dusted and scores a worthy 9/10 on the Mark-O-Meter for rollicking good Kiwi yarns. Well done. I enjoyed it heaps. I’m sure you did not have to search too far in your memory banks to find true cop traits for these characters. Certainly a great Kiwi book. Awesome job.

  3. Pat

Just finished this book. It was a good read. Had a laugh at some of the names. Started it yesterday pm and did not feel like putting it down last night. Finished it tonight.

I enjoyed reading “Heist in the Hutt”. Congratulations on a well written and realistic piece of NZ fiction. I will be recommending it to others.

I have just put down the riveting first novel of Rob Rattenbury’s Heist in the Hutt. Riveting , because I could not put it down. The all action fast paced story of a jewellery robbery that turns into the murder of two police officers and the subsequent investigation is superb.
As an ex Detective Rob has detailed the Police officers and criminals based on his own Highly regarded Police career. I kept thinking I have worked with that officer and investigated that criminal.
It reminded me for authenticity to the Police novels I grew-up written by Joseph Wambaugh an ex LA police officer… realistic, gritty , human touch.
Whether you are an existing or current Police officer or just a fan of a great yarn… Read it, loved it.

Just wanted to say I absolutely loved the book — a real page-turner! It was such a neat experience reading about places I know and grew up in. Having police in the family from that region made it all the more personal and fascinating.
I really appreciated the glimpse into the complexities of a police investigation and the chase to catch criminals on the run. You captured that world so vividly. I’d thoroughly recommend it to any crime fiction lover — I even put down my David Baldacci to read it, and I wasn’t disappointed!
Congratulations on a fantastic book. I’m already looking forward to the sequel!
