This compilation of three formal lectures given by consulting engineer, David Hopkins, covers three distinct phases.

The Hopkins Lecture of 2002 given in the Christchurch Town Hall, reflects on his career as a consulting engineer as part of a team of architects, scientists, engineers and planners. A special tribute to his father, for whom the Lecture was named, is included.

The Noel Nathan Memorial Lecture, given in Vancouver in May 2012, looked back at David’s experiences following the Canterbury Earthquakes of 2010 and 2011, including roles on the Canterbury Earthquakes Recovery Commission, evaluation of major buildings following the 22 February Earthquake, and managing the DBH investigations into the collapse of the CTV Building.

Having helped establish a fund in the names of his mentors, Professors Bob Park and Tom Paulay, David was particularly honoured to give the inaugural Park and Paulay Lecture at the Pacific Conference on Earthquake Engineering in Auckland in 2019. He took the opportunity pick out important issues and offer comment, based on his wide experience in the structural and earthquake engineering field.

His overall message: Engineering matters.
