“You’re a dick, Mummy” are the first words my son Jamie spoke to me after he regained his speech. My goal was always the rehabilitation of my son so that he could be the very best that he could possibly be, back into a community, functioning at the highest possible level – and if that meant that he never spoke to me again, then that was bearable. Eleven years on I am very, very proud of my son and his achievements but the toll it took was inconceivable until it was too late. Now I understand why some families disintegrate and why survivors of brain injury often resort to alcohol and drug abuse. It doesn’t have to be this way.
