Early in 2014 David Burnham invited William Gordon to see a recent series of twelve new collage works at his studio. Each collage comprised new and used industrial abrasive papers. David expressed his hope to publish a book of this series, with a written response in the form of verse. William was immediately taken by the beauty and stillness of the work and agreed to contribute.
David had given the series the title “Days of Darkness”, a text taken from the Old Testament book of Ecclesiastes. William thought he could work with this theme in mind although in discussion they agreed that there should be no hard and fast rule. The work was not specific. He wanted an articulated verbal response, not necessarily an elucidation of specific meaning, nor a straight-jacket poem per collage mix and match basis.
