In a retrospective exhibition of Brian Millard’s work a very few years ago the guest speaker on opening the show began with the words, “I look around this gallery at all these works and what I see is best described as aweful”. Every jaw in the audience dropped and there was a stunned silence. Then the speaker went on to say “… aweful in its correct meaning, to describe something that is full of awe. For that is what these painting are. They are full of awe for what the artist sees around him”.

If you believe there is still a need to express the aesthetic in painting then the watercolours in this book will give you great pleasure indeed. For they celebrate the beauty of the world and the people who live in it. Giving pleasure is after all the the reason they exist and the primary reason for their creation. It is no wonder Brian Millard is considered to be one of New Zealand’s favourite artists.
