No Better Life is the story of a Police Inspector in a rural district of Northern Rhodesia-Zambia, revealed through a series of anecdotes and observations that also illuminate the lives of the settler-farming community and the local tribes-people.
The ten-years of these memoirs span the transfer of power from British Protectorate to Independent Republic.
That ‘self-rule’ did not result in the triumphant march of progress in Zambia, or anywhere in Africa south of the Sahara, is explained by the precipitate nature of its coming, for it cut short a programme of advancement, the aim of which was stable government, economic prosperity and social security.
