This workbook introduces light and sound waves. It covers the basic principles of light and sound waves including interpreting wave diagrams, transverse and longitudinal and how these waves travel. It goes into the organs involved in hearing and sight and how they use these different waves as stimuli. The structures of the eye and ear are covered as well as the basic functions of their parts.
It focuses on aspects of levels 3, 4 and 5 of the New Zealand Science Curriculum.
It contains many varied investigations that begin to give students the knowledge and skills that they need to carry on to investigating at NCEA Level 1.
The literacy tasks in this workbook encourage the students to read for meaning, scan material, select appropriate information and understand keywords. The inclusion of mini-research projects prepares students for what is required in the Senior Sciences.
The numeracy tasks involve averaging, rounding, graphing, tabulating data and reading scales such as stopwatches accurately. These are all vital skills in the Sciences and beyond.
Specific Learning Outcomes
At the completion of this topic, students should be able to:
describe the waves involved with light and sound.
give descriptions of the properties of light and sound.
interpret wave diagrams to describe pitch and volume.
label the parts of a diagram of the ear and eye.
describe the basic functions of the key parts of the ear and eye.
describe the processes of sight and hearing.
define reflection and refraction.
define the law of reflection.
predict the movement of light rays as they enter/exit a medium.
use mirrors and lenses to show the properties of light.
describe the visible spectrum and relate this to the creation of rainbows.
predict colours when different lights are mixed or shone onto coloured objects.
explain how shadows form and describe how they change over a day.
describe how musical instruments work.
read and interpret information from a text with a science focus.
