Stories from Westland about the Mackleys, the Butlers, and the Fergusons

The book begins with the history of Waipuna, settled by Mackley in 1862. It was the first registered farm in Westland, approved by Nelson’s Commissioner of Lands, Mr JC Richmond. In 1864, Thomas Herbert Mackley was the first European child born in Westland.

A Mackley maiden married a Butler of the sawmilling and bridge-building family of Westland. They produced Irene Butler who married George Ferguson and gave birth to nine Fergusons of Fergusons Bush near Ross in South Westland.

The author is a born West Coaster who worked with the Fergusons Earthmoving Company in the 1950s when contracting was at its height in Westland. Fergusons secured nine of the eleven contracts to build the last section of Highway Number Six between the Paringa Flat and the Whakapohai River near Knights Point where the road was officially opened in November 1965.

The book has appealed to many readers, particularly those of West Coast origin.
