Buncha’s Tales is an almost true selection of yarns written by Bruce (Buncha) Keys. Buncha taught at a small rural high school in South Canterbury for more than forty years, and the book begins by chronicling amusing anecdotes of antics by students and staff alike. Buncha liked to teach by relating true life stories and ‘that reminds me’ became the catch phrase that prompted a digression from his planned lesson into anecdotes from his own life experiences. Always funny, the book moves on to tales about Buncha’s life in the Mackenzie Country and the characters he met there. South Westland features as his playground for fishing and whitebait excursions into his mate’s blocks at Thomas Bluff and the Cascade Valley. Final chapters relate experiences with snow sports and his efforts at ski racing.

As an ex-student and snow sports participant I was aware of some of Bruce’s stories (and lesson digressions) but a good portion of these stories were still something new and well told. Thoroughly entertaining but reckon there’s another book’s worth there somewhere.
