Over my working life, I’ve had many jobs, first starting in a draper’s shop in Nelson as a teenager. I then farmed at Kairuru, Canaan and Marlborough, and went gold-mining up the Howard River before working for the Public Works, driving lorries and heavy machinery along the East Coast. Following this, I worked for the Main Highway Board, then as a nurse at Ngawhatu Psychiatric Hospital, owned a grocery shop, logged plantations from Golden Downs and various Nelson areas, and grew tobacco and hops. Finally I spent 10 years working for Waimea County before retiring.
For leisure, I spent time flying, skiing, working with the coast guard and radio, built several houses and spent a period of time owning a small pleasure boat.
Throughout this all, I have seen many changes in working and leisure, especially regarding technology. This is my story about these changes. Happy reading!Harold Brough has since passed away his stories give a enjoyable insight into the experiences of his life.
